Exceptionals

Rachel LaTour
Exceptionals is an original TV series concept. It was created by award-winning screenwriters and FBF contributors Greg Kerr and Rochelle Muzquiz.
The series follows the lives of a group of people who have unusual genetic traits that confer advantages on them that are much like super powers. The series is drama and includes science fiction and thought-provoking dialogue and situations.
Exceptionals is a one-hour drama series that includes science fiction and thriller elements. The series also falls into the genre of super-hero realism: normal people who discover they have special abilities and their struggles to integrate these into their normal lives. Their abilities are often difficult to control or have very dire consequences for the characters.
Science fiction concepts in the show are similar to those in Star Trek, but with a human, Earth-based perspective. Telepathy, genetic manipulation, alternate realities, spacial anomalies, and first contact will all be explored.
Among the other important and unique aspects of this project
- Strong women are the principal characters in this series and many of them are in STEM careers. Traditionally, most science fiction and superhero shows are over 75% men; Exceptionals’ cast is over 75% women. This isn’t something the show calls attention to either — it’s just the way it is.
- Over 50% of the cast are people of color, and we are committed to ensuring that the writing staff also reflects the show’s diversity.
- The target audiences are women and men in their 20s and 30s, particularly those who enjoy super-hero stories, relationship stories, realistic dramas, science fiction, and some action elements.
- This script passes and exceeds all Bechdel test requirements.
